Which Tony’s?

Posted on October 29, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg

I ate at Tony’s on State Street the other night and I loved the hand-painted steak sandwich mural painted on the window. I am not sure if we are the only family that does this but whenever someone suggests eating at Tony’s inevitably the next question is. Which Tony’s? They are all great but each one is a little different. I like the fish on State Street, The dining room is bigger on Center at Blocks Plaza and I also like the Tony’s on Gratiot.  So once again the question is, which Tony’s?

J. W. Ippel Dry Goods for TBT

Posted on October 25, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg

It’s Thursday and it’s time for a throwback photo. I saw this old pic of Ippels and I thought I would post it. I wish I had gone around taking photos years ago and had a photo of Ippels and the Fordney next door. I still remember the green color that the old Ippel building was painted.

Pure Saginaw wall calendars are ON SALE this weekend you can order them from my website HERE

Gera

Posted on October 23, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg

The big little town of Gera sits at the railroad crossing on M-83, also known as South Gara Road. I am sure a lot of tourists drive through Gera on their way to Frankenmuth.  The town was originally was called Frankenmuth Station when a depot was built next to the Michigan Central Railroad tracks. In 1894, the town was given a post office and the name was changed to Gera after a town in Germany. The post office closed in 1902,  but the little town still exists. I know I have driven through it many times on my way to Frankenmuth.

North School for TBT

Posted on October 18, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg

It’s strange driving down Remington and seeing the large empty field behind Saginaw General. This pic of North Intermediate School is one of the earliest photos I took for Pure Saginaw. I like the fall out shelter sign near the doorway. Apparently, the building could withstand a nuclear blast, but not the changing economy.

Big Ugly Fish

Posted on October 14, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg

I love driving past the Big Ugly Fish on State Street and reading the sign on the side. It always makes me laugh. I used to live a couple blocks away and I can’t remember what the name of it before it was ” the fish ”

The Old High School for TBT

Posted on October 11, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg

The old Arthur Hill High School on Court Street. the not for the pic said it was taken in 1935, I will admit I don’t remember this school because it was demolished before I was even born.

The Great Mural

Posted on October 9, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg

After part of the building on the corner of Washington and Genesee was torn down the Imagine mural painted by Eric R. Shantz is gone. A new vibrant mural was installed this summer. I hope it helps to bring attention to one of the oldest buildings in Saginaw at that someone will be interested in restoring it. If you want to know more about the new mural check out the Great Mural Project’s facebook page HERE

How To Move A Bridge

Posted on October 7, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg

Yes, you can move a bridge with heavy equipment and a crane, but the best way is through power and influence. The bridge that crosses the Cass River west of Frankenmuth on Beyer Road is known as the Gugel Bridge.

Built in 1904, this 204-foot-long bridge carried the Detroit and Saginaw Turnpike over the Cass River in Bridgeport Township. By around 1919 the pike, which became the well-traveled Dixie Highway, required a more substantial crossing and this bridge was replaced. The bridge was relocated to Beyer road because the county treasurer at the time was W. Christian Gugel and he used his influence to move the bridge near his farm.  For years the locals referred to the bridge as the Gugel Bridge. The bridge closed in 1979. William ‘Tiny’ Zehnder had the structure restored as a pedestrian bridge in 2004. The Gugel Bridge is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Red Sky In The Morning

Posted on October 5, 2018 by Mike Sonnenberg

What a beautiful sunrise this morning. I was not able to get out and take a pic with an iconic Saginaw landmark, but I think this pic from my backyard is still beautiful. Thank you all for following me and I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
