I found this aerial photo of Downtown Saginaw taken in 1965, in the Saginaw Public Library archives. It’s fascinating to zoom in on it and look at it. (click on the image to see the full size) It was taken before I675 was built, and you can see the old Masonic Lodge where the civic center is now. it’s also amazing how many buildings are gone now. like the block where the Savoy Bar and Grill is on near Franklin and Federal, it was all buildings, and now it’s mostly parking lots. Looking at the top half of the photo, the large building in the upper left is the Veterans Hospital on Weiss street, and northwest from there, in Saginaw Township, it’s mostly farmland.
I am hopeful that in a few decades from now, the next generation will look back at the old satellite images from google maps, and remark about all the empty lots that the new building will be sitting on.
