I thought about posting a photo of a church but I could not decide which one so here is are the statues at St Andrews Cemetery on Gratiot and West Michigan. I was going through an old archive of photos from Saginaw and I came across this old photo of St. Josaphat’s school and church on Shattuck in Carrollton. I recognized it instantly because I went to school there for a few years. I still remember getting fresh paczki on fat Tuesday. I know this pic is old because it shows a house next to the school where a parking lot is when I went there years ago. I am not sure if the building started as a church and converted to a school or if the church was on the first floor and the school on the second floor.

I saw this old church on the east not far from the Stevie Wonder rock. It is the Community Temple Church of God on the corner of 4th and Farwell. I thought it was a nice-looking old church so I stopped and got a pic of it. I am sure there is some history to it but unfortunately I don’t know it.

A pic from a while ago when there was snow on the ground. I know it has a different name now but I still call it St Helens since it was the church my grandparents went to every Sunday. I need to go out and take some more pics while the holiday lights are on but I have been waiting for some more snow. I figure if it is gonna be cold it would be nice to have some snow on the ground.

I figure since today is Thursday I should do a throwback Thursday photo. Instead of going way back to over a century ago, I am going back about a fortnight to the snowstorm in Mid November. I took this pic of St Johns Lutheran Church in Zilwaukee on a cold snowy morning and thought that this would be a good time to share it with you.

Somehow I ended up at SVSU during this weekend winter wonderland weather event. I stopped and got a pic of Founders Hall. It was built in 1995. It amazes me how much the campus has changed and grown over the years. We are fortunate to have such a wonderful college in the Saginaw Valley.
P.S. I still call it Saginaw Valley State College.

Larry from the Taymoyth Twp Historic Association gave me a tour of the historic St Pauls Episcopal Mission Church on Seymour Road. The church was built in 1874 by Scottish, Irish and English Immigrants. When we walked inside the historic church I noticed was the all the holes in the wooden floor about the diameter of a silver dollar.
Larry said the holes in the floor allow heat from the basement to come up thru the floor and heat the church. He said there is a large “coffin-shaped” furnace in the basement that they would stoke before the church services. There are wooden plugs that people could use to plug the hole in front of them while sitting in a pew if they were getting to warm.
The size of the congregation dwindled and services were held monthly in the late 1800s and after the turn of the century, the last service was held in 1909. surprisingly the church survived years of abandonment and in the past few years the Taymouth Twp. Historical Association has been restoring the old church.

I went past Forest Lawn cemetery and I had to stop and check out the old chapel since it’s been a while since I took a pic of it. Sadly there are some stones around the base that have fallen out. I have never been inside this grand old chapel but the outside is beautiful and it’s sad to see it slowly decay. I wish I could just pick it up and move it. I think it would make for a beautiful wedding chapel.

I found this old photo of St Mary’s church in the Library of Congress archives. The interesting thing about old photos of Churches is they seem timeless. unlike photos of downtown when buildings are demolished or businesses change the church buildings look the same as they did 100 years ago.

At the intersection of Mackinaw and Amelith Road was the town of Amelith, and If you’re familiar with Saginaw County, I am sure you are thinking that the town would be in Bay County, and you would be correct. Years ago it was platted as Saginaw County, but the Citizens of Amileth and Frankenlust had easier access to Bay City than Saginaw and they changed the county lines at their request.
Reverand Ferdinand Seivers founded a colony in Frankenlust township and his father-in-law Frederick Koch was so impressed with the area that he started a town of his own calling it Amelith. He named the town after his homeland in Germany. Koch purchased two thousand acres of the former Saginaw Bay Chippewa Reserve at $1.25 an acre. In 1851 the first settlers arrived from the Bavarian town of Tosstel. In 1894 the town was given a post office and at one time the town included a coal mine, and a cheese factory, along with stores, mills and saloons. By 1900 the mine had closed and immigration had ceased and the post office closed in 1904
About the only thing that remains from the old town is the St John’s Lutheran Church that was founded by Pastor Ferdinand Sievers and organized June 1852 to serve a colony of German immigrants, some fleeing the turmoil that followed the European revolutions of 1848. Initially, the church met in a log cabin that once housed recent arrivals to the colony of Amelith. In 1870 a wood-frame Gothic style church was built. The present structure was completed in 1912. Schools run by the church began in 1853 with teachers speaking German until World War I. Some church services were spoken in the German language as late as 1979. During World War II, German prisoners housed at Camp Freeland were ministered to by St. John’s Lutheran Church. You can read my post about Camp Freeland POW camp HERE
