South of Saginaw and west of Birch Run is the small town of Burt. The Taymouth Township Library stands in the small town. I can only assume it once served as the community’S school since a stone on the front reads: BURT JR HIGH DIST. No. 8 1928

I was going through an old archive of photos from Saginaw and I came across this old photo of St. Josaphat’s school and church on Shattuck in Carrollton. I recognized it instantly because I went to school there for a few years. I still remember getting fresh paczki on fat Tuesday. I know this pic is old because it shows a house next to the school where a parking lot is when I went there years ago. I am not sure if the building started as a church and converted to a school or if the church was on the first floor and the school on the second floor.

Lovira Hart Jr., an early pioneer of Tuscola County, built the Hart Schoolhouse with the help of his neighbors sometime between 1855 and 1860. It was built on Hart’s property on Hart Road, an eighth of a mile south of Frankenmuth Road. It was designated as South district #2 in Tuscola County. The school closed in 1921 and sat empty on the Hart farm for years. In 2000 Raymond and Marth Hart donated the old Schoolhouse to Tiny Zehnder and it was moved and preserved on his farm south of Frankenmuth.

The old Mershon school once sat on Stoker Drive in Carrollton. When the brick school was built in 1922 at a cost of $30,000 it was said to be one of the most modern and well equiped schools in the state. An orchestra played at the dedication given by the honorable Judge Snow. I am not sure but I am assuming the name was in honor of William B. Mershon who built a sawmill nearby in 1879. The school closed in 1972 after the current Carrollton School was built on Carla Drive. Sitting empty for years the roof collapsed and being laden with asbestos no one could renovate it. In 2006 the school was demolished without fanfare or an orchestra.
I grew up in Carrollton and lived about a half-mile from the old school. I vaguely remember it. I wish I had taken some photos of the old brick building but I had not thought about it at the time and wished I had taken photos of a lot of places that are gone. My grandfather grew up not far from the old school and he told me he attended it as a child. I am wondering how many of you remember this school? please leave me a comment below.

I was at the old Buena Vista High School and I saw this rock with a plaque for the Jesse Johnson Memorial Garden. It was dedicated in 1982 and it reads that he lived from 1923 to 1978. I tried to do some research to find out a little bit more about him and all I could find was a scholarship in his honor HERE . I have limited time to research it since I am busy at work during the day. If you know anything about him I would appreciate it if you post something in the comments.

It’s strange driving down Remington and seeing the large empty field behind Saginaw General. This pic of North Intermediate School is one of the earliest photos I took for Pure Saginaw. I like the fall out shelter sign near the doorway. Apparently, the building could withstand a nuclear blast, but not the changing economy.

The old Arthur Hill High School on Court Street. the not for the pic said it was taken in 1935, I will admit I don’t remember this school because it was demolished before I was even born.

When I drive down Remington near Saginaw General Hospital I see the field where North Intermediate School used to stand and its almost hard to believe a massive school building once stood there. It’s been about 4 years since the old school was razed.

I took some photos of Kempton Elementary School on Davenport street and a few days later I was at the Castle Museum looking at their Becoming Modern exhibit, showcasing some of the modern architecture in Saginaw, and there I saw a model of Kempton Elementary School. I recognized it right away because of the arched covered walkway that welcomes students into the school. Designed by F. Wigen and Associates the school was the winner of the 1964 AIA Merit Award for its innovative design which incorporated an interior courtyard.
Built in 1961, Kempton Elementary School started the school year with Eleanor J. Dodge, a former teacher at South Intermediate School, as its first principal. The school is named in honor of Dr. Rockwell M. Kempton, who died in 1952, he was a prominent Saginaw physician who specialized in children’s diseases.

As the kids go back to school it’s hard for me to imagine what it must have been like to go to a one room schoolhouse. I Graduated from Carrollton High School in the 80’s and we had about 80 students in my graduating class. I always thought that was a small school, now with the way schools are funded, it seems to benefit the larger school districts to have more students for more funding, and I am sure we will never see any new one room schoolhouses.
Bridgeport’s School District #6 was established in 1862 and the school was built in 1867. Miss Lucie H. Adams was the first teacher in the new school building. In 1953, the school was moved from 4705 South Washington Road to Brown Street, a.k.a. Bearcat Boulevard, across from the old Bridgeport Junior High, where Mrs. McNally used the school as a music classroom and it was nicknamed “Carnegie Hall.”
In 1962, it was painted red, named “The Little Red Schoolhouse” and was used as a pioneer school museum. In 1987 with the old schoolhouse deteriorating the school district made the decision to have it demolished but a group of Bridgeport citizens raised money and had it moved to the Bridgeport Historic village in 1990 and restored it to it’s original condition and color.
