I found this old photo of Sebald’s Bakery which stood on State Street. It’s been a while since this building was still standing and I can’t remember exactly where it was but I think it’s where Burger King is now.
Leonard Sebald purchased the former Fischer Bakery from owner Eugene Fischer at the northwest corner of South Alexander and Court, near Bay, and opened Sebald’s Bakery Coffee Bar in 1942. In 1953, the business moved to State near Center in Saginaw Township when city planners developed the grassy boulevard eliminating the front parking affecting businesses all along Court. Sebald died in 1973, and his sons, Erwin O. and Harold R. Sebald took ownership. By 2004, failing health was preventing Erwin Sebald from working, and the brothers decided it was time to call it quits and closed the shop.
The original sign from the bakery hangs in the Sign Park on the corner of Court and Hamilton.
