I suppose this is the where you think I am gonna talk about the new buffet that Jeff Foxworthy brags about in their commercials. Or maybe the Chinese buffet down the street. Or maybe the two across from the mall. Surprisingly I think the best buffet in Saginaw is on the campus of SVSU.

The Marketplace at Doan is deep within the main building in the center of campus. It offers a plethora of choices including a Mongolian BBQ.

When I ate there I was really impressed with the verity of choices they had to offer. At the time I at there it was only $8.95 and you don’t have to be a student to enjoy it. I am sure if you are a student and live on campus and eat there all the time it would get a little old but I think compared to the other buffets in town and for the price Its a great place to eat. Next time you are at SVSU for a sporting event, RV show or visiting the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum stop by the Market Place a Doan for a bite to eat. It will also give you a chance to check ou the campus. I can’t believe how much it has changed over the past few decades.

Ever since Tony Stark mentioned getting shawarma in the Avengers movie I have wanted to try it.  if you don’t know what shawarma is that’s ok, I did not know either. It’s a process of cooking seasoned meat on a spit, kinda like the way they cook meat for gyros.  Now that Sandweesh in Old Town is open on the corner of Michigan Ave and Cass Street I had to check it out and guess what. They serve chicken shawarma.

I would say the best way to describe Sandweesh is it’s like a Mediterranean version of  Qdoba or Chipotle where you pick your meat, either Chicken, Lamb ( traditional gyro style) or falafel ( which I need to go back and try).  you can either get a bowl, wrap or salad and then you pick your veggies and sauce. I got a chicken shawarma with pita chips and it was delicious. Sandweesh is a nice change from the usual burgers and tacos. I highly recommend it if you want something a little different.  You can find a menu on their website HERE

I headed down State Street and I noticed some writing on the window at Mooney’s. They are opening Friday, August 11th.  You can get all your favorite flavor’s in time for the summer heat. Of course, if you’re a Michigander like me you eat ice cream all year long even on the coldest days of winter. You can find their facebook page HERE

I came across Hometown Eats on youtube and I had to share it with you. Marlow Dunn visits local restaurants around Saginaw and posts some awesome videos of the places he’s been to and the food they serve. Sorry, I have not been posting much lately, I have been busy with my kid’s school activities and working on my house, Besides being busy with that, I have also been having some minor health issues. I hope to be back to normal soon.

I see there is work going on at the old restaurant on Bay road near Shattuck. Not sure what they are doing, or what the plans are for the building, but I hope its something good. The building has been empty for years. I just read in the comments that Paint Bull is moving from Zilwaukee into the building.   It has been a few different restaurants, I hope I can remember them correctly. I think it started out as Hollys By Golly’s, next it was Cheap Charlies, Bubba’s and then it was R.J.’s. It would be nice to see the building being used again.

I like this colorful lion on Wally’s Sandwich Shop that keeps an eye on people entering downtown from the south on Washington Ave. The sun was shining on him, I am not sure what his name is, maybe Wally, but I had to stop and get another pic.

Many years ago, when I first started working in Old Town, some co-workers got subs from Intermission Deli in the old Forndey Hotel (more about the Fordney HERE) and they have been my favorite place to go and get a sub since I at there so many years ago. Now they are on Bay Road between State and Davenport, tucked away behind the other buildings, if you did’nt know where they were you might miss them, but us locals know where they are at.

They have a vast varity of subs on their menu, all of which are numbered, and if you have eaten there a few times, you know your favorite subs number, like the number of you favorite sports hero. Mine is number #23, no not my sports hero, but my favorite sub, the Deli Cowboy.  if you have never had one of their giant subs, which a 6″ is about the equivalent of a foot long at those other places, you should try them, but you gotta get there early as they only have a limited amount of bread for the day.

I was told that Hamilton Bakery makes the bread for them every day, but when its gone they call it a day and close until the next day. If you are late for lunch, like about 1:00 or 2:00 I advise calling them to see if they still have bread, so you don’t show up and see the sign on the door.  You can find more on their facebook page HERE

I am not Greek, nor an expert on Greek food ,but I do know one thing, and that is I love the food a Zorba’s Lounge on the corner of Gratiot and South Harrison. They have the best gyros around, and to complement them, the grecian potatoes are amazing. I have been eating there for years and the food and service has always been excellent. I love the old school paneling and posters of Greece. I also think the prices have not changed much over the years, you can get a good meal for the price of one of those “value” meals at the fast food joints. The staff has always been friendly and it’s my place to go for something a little different, but they do have other stuff like burgers and fries for those that don’t like Greek food.
