I was under the Court Street Bridge in Old Town and when I went around the bridge support there was Abraham Lincoln staring back at me. Not the real Abe Lincoln, he died a few years ago but it was a graffiti mural of him painted by an unknown artist. While I was there some people were doing some portraits along the wall with their camera and this time of year a lot of high school seniors do pics under the bridge. I know it’s a challenging subject since it is vandalism and I don’t think anyone should be painting on anything without permission but I have always thought it would be nice if the city and/or the police could have some artists or art students do some school themed murals under the bridge. I know a lot of students who can’t afford professional portraits so they go to Old Town for some DIY portraits and the walls under the bridge makes for some interesting backdrops. Eric R. Schantz had painted some beautiful murals around Saginaw, but most of them are gone now, either painted over or the building demolished. It’s sad to see the tasteless vulgar amateur looking graffiti on the walls in Old Town and the bright blue and pink that was used to paint over some of it is not very attractive either. I guess we will see how long old Abe hangs around before being covered in paint.
