In 1875 Lewis Cass Slade ( named after Michigan Pioneer Lewis Cass) got his start in the lumber business working on the docks of Jesse Hoyt’s Lumber Mill, eventually he worked his way up until he became one of the company’s leading men. In 1884 he partnered with Charles J Stevens the firm being known as Stephens & Slade which bought and sold lumber in car lots. Two years later Mr Slade acquired the interest of his partner and started a lumber sorting yard in Saginaw. In 1885 He built this magnificent home and carriage house in the Cathedral district at 1023 South Jefferson.
