I went downtown the other night to get some photos at night, but the place I wanted to get a pic of did not have the lights turned on, so I figured I can never go wrong getting a pic of the Castle Museum. I have not taken any in a while since the road was tore up for construction, but now that it’s done, I can get some pics.

This is the old firehouse on Bay Road near Court Street. It’s been empty for a while after a few different restaurants occupied the old firehouse, but eventually closed. I have tried to find some old photos of it when it was a fire station, but I have not found any. I know I ain’t as old as some of you out there, but I don’t even remember this when it was a fire station. The only reason why I know it was one at one time, goes back to when it was Nine’s Bar and Grill, I liked to eat there, and they had the firehouse decor. it would be be nice to see the old firehouse in use again. Hopefully sometime I can find some more history about the old firehouse.

I took this photo about 5 years ago of the sunflowers on Washington Ave near Genesee. Things sure have changed since then, there was a garden on this lot, and the Imagine Mural was painted on the wall in the Background. After the renovations to the Bancroft the garden was replaced with a parking lot, then the building the mural was on was demolished, and now the buildings on the corner of Genesee and Franklin are gone. Things sure seem to change fast, faster than I can except them sometimes, but as they say, the only constant is change, I just hope things change for the better, but I guess only time will prove if that is true, unless it changes again.

The old service station on Washington Ave south of downtown that Eric R Schantz painted several years ago is still looking great. I took a lot of photos of it after he painted it, but I have not really stopped a looked at it in a while. It’s surprises me that it has not been ” tagged” with graffiti and it still looks really good. I am not sure who owns the station, or what the plans are for it, but I hope it will stay around for a while since it is Saginaw’s oldest service station still standing.
I am just barely old enough to remember when you pulled into a gas station, and heard the ” DING DING” and a guy came out and pumped your gas and checked your oil. I also remember when you could get your car fixed at the gas station. Now most of the gas stations are convenience stores, I’m not sure that bad or good, it just is what it is.

I was heading home last night, and as I traveled across the Johnson Street bridge, I saw downtown Saginaw illuminated by the setting sun. I had to stop and take a few pics, even though I have taken several pics of downtown from the bridge before, I figured why not take a few more while I can.

I saw this photo in the Saginaw Public Library archives of these guys working on the road at the corner of Michigan and Genesee in the 70’s, I know the photos is supposed to be about the workers, but what I noticed were all the buildings. Like the old gas station on the corner with the ” ding ding” full service, where Rite Aid is now. And one of my favorite places, Wesley’s Bicycle Shop. I can still remember that new Schwinn smell when you walked in the front door. I also remember N. Michigan being a one way street north of Genesee, and it still feels strange driving the ” wrong way”. Whenever I drive thru that intersection, I always remember the way it was.

Waiting at the stop light on the corner of Genesee and Washington, I glanced over at the old Mason Building, and noticed the faded lettering of WSGW. I almost forgot they started in that building. WSGW’s first broadcast was August 11, 1950 from their studios at Genesee and Washington Avenues on the third floor of the Mason Building in downtown Saginaw. The station was started by John Lord Booth, of Detroit who founded Booth American Company. In 1973 Booth built new studios at 1795 Tittabawassee Road with then sister station WIOG.
The Mason building on the corner, if not the not the oldest building in downtown, it is definitely one of the oldest buildings still standing today. The Kahan-Dominium building, also known as the “Bliss Block” or the “Mason Building,” was designed by celebrated Saginaw architect Ludwig V. Bude and built by Bliss, Fay & Co. in the 1860s. Underneath the aluminum facade is a beautiful old brick building.
I am not sure if the Mason Building is slated for demolition along with the other historic buildings on the block, but people always tell me we should be more like Bay City, and saving our buildings instead of tearing them down. I find it interesting that recently the Crapo Building in Downtown Bay City had it’s facade removed to reveal its masonry work. Shown HERE ironically on WSGW’s website. Maybe we could be more like Bay City and the land bank could remove the facade on the Mason Building. I wonder what the scrap rate for aluminum is these days but I guess they would rather just tear them down and put up another parking lot.

It was a beautiful night in Saginaw as the Saginaw Area Fireworks exploded in the sky over Saginaw as we celebrate our country’s Independence Day. I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did.

I stopped at Spatz bakery on the corner of State and Bond to get some bread and the sign was out saying they will be on vacation from July 3rd to the 17th. The nice lady working the counter said the week before vacation they affectionately refer to it as “hell week” because they are so busy. If you want your Spatz bread fix now is the time to get it before they take their summer break.
P.S. it took a lot of restraint not to by doughnuts while I was there, ( my doctors said I need to loose some weight) but I am thinking I will have to go back tomorrow to get some.
